HAPARANDA-TORNIO. Ouga Chaka! Ouga Chaka! Ouga ouga ouga chaka!
Twelve hard shouting women made their own version of “Hooked on a Feeling”, standing on the border between Sweden and Finland. It was March 3rd and the acclaimed and appreciated debut for the new women´s choir Rooparit [The Screamers], performing at the Victoria Square in HaparandaTornio. Leader Petri Sirviö from Oulu, Finland, has since 1987 made an international name with his big men’s choir “Huutajat”, thirty men giving new shouting energy to folk music, national hymns and also political themes. The Rooparit is a rather autonomous side project on the Swedish-Finnish border, and will hopefully develop further on their musical journey.
